More About our Director

Brock was first trained as a musician, at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia in the mid 90’s. After a brief career in music, Brock left the art world in pursuit of a more stable career. He went on to become a professor of psychology with a focus on clinical mental health work and Black psychology. Over a 25-year career, Brock became an accomplished scholar and clinician, focusing primarily on improving life for Black communities. Still, Brock never fully lost touch with the arts. In 2001, Brock released an EP, titled Dig, that received critical acclaim and international distribution. In 2010, Brock wrote and produced a silent short film entitled “The Long Goodbye.” Brock wrote the score for this short, which was his first attempt at cinema. In 2012, Brock released a book of artistic nude photography entitled “Beautiful Imperfections.” In 2020, Brock turned his attention, once again, to film. This time, Brock made his directorial debut in an autobiographical short about his experience being diagnosed with autism late in life. “Discovering Autism” was well received at film festivals, earning Brock his first filmmaking award (Best Documentary Short, Best Shorts Film Festival, 2021).

Dr. Brock’s current work integrates his passions for psychology, music, and film by creating meaningful work centered around advocacy and educational. Brock’s feature film debut is a documentary entitled “Black Pittsburgh.” The film uses Brock’s personal journey to reconnect with his roots as the backdrop for an exploration of the history, culture, and politics of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania’s Black community. The film, which features author Damon Young, U.S. Congresswoman Summer Lee, and U.S. Senator John Fetterman, was developed at a Sundance workshop (Documentary Filmmaking) in 2022. The film documents a major turning point in the history of the city, as Pittsburgh elects its first Black mayor. The film is set to be completed in the fall of 2023 and will be released in early 2024. In addition to writing, producing, and directing the film, Brock also composed the score.
